Stolem's gifts

A sculpture created of decorative elements characteristic for Gdansk town houses. A sculpture in the shape of a sphere, adorned with Gdansk decorative elements is located at the entrance to the object. It reminds a fairy tale about Stolem the Wanderer. Everyone can test his or her strength trying to turn the sphere. As the legend goes, Stolem – a giant, travelling around the world sat down to rest on the top of St. Mary’s Church. As a proof of his friendship he had brought toys for children. However, the balls and dolls he had brought were too big for the children to play with so they were used to embellish Gdansk town houses. Hence the stone goddesses, lions, eagles at the tops of the houses and spheres at the fronts. To commemorate Stolem’s visit, the tower of St. Mary’s Church remained unfinished.
